Emails Tracked By Copper Copper Could Be Marked As Spam

When testing my email spam score, one of the detractors is:

If you don't want to add an alt attribute, add an empty one: alt=""

 

Something Copper is adding to my email ( I assume for tracking ) is getting caught by spam filters. How can I resolve this so Copper tracking doesn’t get me potentially filtered out as spam?

Hi @DanThor, thanks for posting! This looks like the pixel the system uses to gather data for tracking email opens. More information here.

If you’re not actively looking at email opens through Copper, then you can turn it off through Settings > Personal Preferences > Email Settings & Templates. At the bottom of that page, there’s a section for “Email Open Tracking.”

If you’re sending emails through Gmail with our Chrome extension enabled, you’ll also get a checkbox beside the Send button to include/exclude tracking for that email.

And if you are looking at the email open numbers, then definitely consider the pros/con of having it on. To be honest, email tracking across the industry is becoming more difficult/less reliable with the range of privacy changes several platforms have implemented. Some of them, for example, will cause the pixel to load not when the specific email is opened, but when the recipient opens their Mail app.

It sounds like deliverability is an important factor for you, so maybe you can try turning it off and checking your spam score again.

So it’s not possible to add an empty alt=””  ?

It’s a little disappointing that a feature of the platform puts my emails at risk of being marked as spam. And the only alternative is to turn off that feature.

@DanThor we don’t have a way for you to customize the tracking pixel code. I can mention it to the team for future consideration, but as for the options that are available now, yes it’s either you have the tracking on or you don’t.

That being said, if you are primarily concerned about decreasing your odds of landing in spam, you might want to consider deactivating the tracker. I can’t say for certain, but I suspect that the fact that the tracker pixel exists at all in your email contents has more of an effect on your odds than whether that pixel has a blank alt text.

I’ll add, a lot of platforms are actively working towards blocking trackers programmatically. Mailchimp has a helpful FAQ about one of Apple’s privacy updates, which prevents the pixels from firing within the Mail app.

If you suspect you’re going to spam pretty often, there might be a bigger picture issue to look at--like the type of content and links you are sending--since spam filters take into account a lot of different factors with varying weights. And not all of those factors can be directly measured by an email spam checker tool.
