Bulk edit

I have a Custom Field under People for Customer Type (i.e. US - West; US - East, etc.). I bulk edited ALL contacts, to change an unrelated field - but seem to have lost my Customer Type (revereted to blank). When I bulk edit, do I have to always re-select all the fields (i.e. Customer Type) - even if not changing that field?
