broken countries in address, how to workaround?

I have a customer in Northern Ireland. This is in the UK (not Great Britain).

When i set their address as “United Kingdom”, it silenly translates it in the database to “GB”.

When i read it back from the API, it is GB (wrong place). The web front end shows United Kingdom for some reason.

This is breaking my integration to my marketing automation tool since it constantly thinks the address is wrong and needs reconcile (e.g. I set A, the read back is B).

What is going on here?

How can i work around this?
