Best practices for handling leads

I currently have 649  “Leads,” most of which have been static for quite a while due to not being sure what to do with them.

What does “convert lead” mean?

Some of these “leads” are existing “People” and I don’t want to add duplicates.

Does “convert lead” just update an existing record or does it add a duplicate person?


Are there any tips on how users typically utilize this feature?

I would like to have my SDR review the leads and work to clear them out but didn’t know about how that affects the People as described above. Additionally, we would like to assign the lead but not all of the sales team has access to the Leads section so we can’t assume them because they can’t view them,


Any ideas would be appreciated!
